Meet Justicia
INT. HEAVEN – DAY
Eros (rushing): Hey, there! Is she in?
He greets the secretary.
Cherub Secretary (shyly responds): Yes! She’s in! Can I help you with – ? Wait, she’s busy!!! Please, Mr. Cupid, she said no visitors today! I don’t want to get in trouble!
Eros (manages to open the door and holds it open): Please, Lily, I already told you, you can call me, Eros, and Justicia always has time for her best friend! Don’t worry!
He coquettishly winks at her; Lily gasps, almost faints, recovers, and blushes with a smile. A voice is heard from behind stacks of paperwork.
Justicia (clears her throat): Thank you, Lily, you may go, and Eros, stop flirting with my staff.
Eros (grinning and trying to fix his hair): Justicia! How have you been? You know everyone has been wondering where you were!? I told them all you’ve been busy this year, but they don’t believe me!
Justicia (sighs): Yeah, I know! I’ve been so bombarded with work that everyone is trying to tell God to replace me with another angel, but I’m doing my best. It’s just – (She sighs again.) I’m supposed to be the angel of Justice, and lately, others question my abilities, and I don’t blame them. (Her voice cracks, and she tries to mask the lump in her throat.)
Eros (notices her sadness and responds empathetically): I know what you mean, Justicia! (He sighs.) Just last year, people doubted in my ability after the whole Angela Aguilar and Christian Nodal fiasco; I mean, obviously I would never help someone commit adultery! Plus, the whole “fan de su relación” thing was the worst; I do my research to create couples, not destroy them!
Justicia smiles, and Eros blushes.
Eros (gaining momentum): Plus, the whole Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni issue also arose during that year! You know, I think she fell in love with him, and she created this whole isolation and manipulation tactic to injure him!
Justicia (sighs): I know she is a whole new level of narcissism that even Narcissus can't compete with! (Eros chuckles.) they’re one of my cases. (She searches and opens the file.) Here it is! I’ve done my research, as well! She doesn’t have a great record with her previous coworkers and then there’s the nepotism, and the way she referred to her husband and her “best friend,” Taylor Swift, as her dragons! (Justicia shakes her head.) There’s a saying in Spanish: “¿Con amigas como esas quien necesita enemigas?”
Eros nods.
Eros: I know! You know, Justicia, I think you should take a break. I mean, everything will clear up soon! Maybe – (He clears his throat.) If you want, we could go down to Earth and watch a movie and then a sunset.
Justicia looks up at him slightly shocked. Eros stares concerned; Justicia then breaks into a laugh and Eros laughs, as well.
Eros: What are we laughing at?
Justicia (wipes a tear): Oh, just that it sounded like a human date! You always were one of the funniest angels I know, Eros!
Eros (whispers): I love you.
Justicia (stops laughing): Oh, sorry! Did you say something, Eros?
Eros (blushes and avoids eye contact): Nope! I was just catching my breath from the laughter, too! Ha ha, anyway, you know how I am, just cracking jokes occasionally!
Justicia (nods): That’s why you’re my best friend!
Justicia turns around, and Eros grips his heart. Justicia turns back around, and Eros stands normally and attentively with a smile.
Eros: Hey! Are you sure we can’t just go somewhere to talk and help you relax from all the workload?
Justicia (sighs): No, I really shouldn’t! Afterall, I also have to work on the Luigi Mangione case.
Eros: Well, isn’t it simple? He had the evidence on him, and murder is a capital sin.
Justicia (sighs): Murder is never the answer.
Eros: There case closed; now we can go out –
Justicia (interjects): However, a lot of things don’t make sense.
Eros (shocked): Justicia! This isn’t like you; clearly the job has had its toll on you!
Justicia: No, Eros; think about it; first of all, if someone had a medical issue, who would they blame?
Eros (visibly pondering): I mean, healthcare is the answer, no?
Justicia (shakes her head): No, maybe I needed to specify, if someone is convinced to have a surgery, who is usually blamed?
Eros thinks and then puts his hands up to signal that he has no clue.
Justicia: It is usually the doctor that a patient blames, not the insurance coverage. Initially, it is the doctor who declares the best method of care, and some, not all, but a few surgeons are so blood crazy, that they mostly want to cut and the insurance benefits, as well.
Eros: But, the CEO was murdered!
Justicia: Exactly, why specifically that CEO and not the others? Why was he the only one that didn’t have a security detail that morning? Why were the other CEOs still able to have their meeting without him?
Eros (flabbergasted): Justicia, I can’t believe this; this isn’t like you!
Justicia (shakes her head): No, Eros; I’m tired, you’re right about that, but I’m tired of evil people being let out on the American justice system.
Eros: What can you possibly mean?
Justicia: Off the top of my head, and it began before him, but first, there was Aaron Burr.
Eros: But, it had been a duel; Hamilton consented to it, so –
Justicia (interjects): Hamilton chose to misaim, but Burr aimed to kill.
Eros nods in understanding.
Justicia (sighs and continues): Then, there were many atrocities, such as slavery and the crimes of Andrew Jackson.
Eros nods with more agreement, but still he looks slightly puzzled at Justicia.
Justicia: Then, there are the monster murderers, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, who savagely assassinated Emmett Till!
Eros (interrupts): But, now they’re in the seventh circle of hell, and they can never be reincarnated! Plus, Caroline Bryant is now with them as well!
Justicia (shakes her head): You don’t get it! Where was the justice for Emmett? The verdict and jury were a joke to justice! People rightly questioned my strength there!
Eros: But, that was back then, humanity has grown now!
Justicia (scoffs): Yeah, just like how George Zimmerman was incarcerated after murdering Trayvon Martin!
Eros: Exactly!
Justicia: Except Zimmerman wasn’t!! He got out, and it was all thanks to racists and bigots who helped pay his legal fees!
Eros: Oh, I didn’t –
Justicia: Not to mention, Kyle Rittenhouse, who plotted and murdered four BLM activists, but hey, the judge saw his grandson in Kyle, so why not, right? Or how about Brock Allen Turner, who raped Ms. Miller and was apprehended by two witnesses, but he posted bail because daddy was able to afford it, and Judge Persky gave him the benefit of the doubt because after all, it was his first offense ever, and Brock “has a promising future ahead of him.”
Eros stares silently and lowers his gaze.
Justicia (cries): People have wondered where I’ve been, and I was there at each trial, but I never agreed with those verdicts! They’ve been rightfully tired and have wondered if the blindfold obstructs my sense of justice. Well, it doesn’t, but those humans in power believe that they can get away with their crimes and verdicts because they assume I can’t see the Truth.
Eros goes to hug Justicia, and she initially retreats, but Eros has a look of sadness and empathy that helps her trust him and hug him back. Justicia cries into his arms.
Eros (trying to mask the knot in his throat): I’m sorry, Justicia; we didn’t know about – (He stutters.) We should’ve – (clears his throat) I should have asked and done my research as well. I’m always here if you need me.
Justicia relaxes in his arms, but then suddenly, Lily enters the room with a large case file.
Lily (blushes and then has a look of sadness): I’m so sorry to interrupt, but there’s a new file, Miss. It’s about Jocelynn Rojo Carranza. (Eros and Justicia stare, and Justicia nods at Lily to continue.) She took her life at 11 years old after being bullied and repeatedly harassed by her assailants that they would get her and her family deported. Racists had evil things to post after her news broke out. Also, Trump has been protecting the domestic terrorists by pardoning them and punishing anyone who calls them that; also, he’s been using the deportation threats and purposefully misplacing immigrants, like those from Venezuela to the Salvadorean prison!
Eros looks at Lily and sighs; Justicia recollects herself.
Justicia (looks at both Eros and Lily): You know what, Eros, you’re right, I am taking a break!
Lily stares confused, and Eros looks at Justicia.
Justicia: I’m going down to Florida, specifically Mar-A-Lago. I think the people deserve this.
Lily stares directly at Justicia with pride, and Eros looks concerned, but Justicia reassures him with a strong smile.
BLACKOUT.
